Types of Mulch

Mulch is very effective for weed control and moisture retention in your garden beds.

When spreading mulch, we recommend approximately 3” deep for best weed control. For ordering purposes, one yard of mulch will cover approximately 100 square feet at 3” deep.

We have the largest selection of mulch in the Niagara Peninsula with many different varieties.

Cedar Mulch

Natural, golden-brown, cedar mulch

Appearance

This type of mulch has a brown colour that greys with age. It also has a fresh ground white cedar bark texture that releases a strong cedar aroma.

Horticulture Benefits

It has a fibrous texture, which mats together to hold the mulch in place resulting in a clean finish
It forms a natural weed barrier by resisting airborne weed seeds
Helps in retaining soil moisture

Pine Mulch ( SPM )

Rich, natural, shredded pine mulch, with a strong forest aroma.

Also called Canada Red Mulch

Appearance

This type of mulch is reddish brown in colour, and turns to dark brown/black after aging. It gives a fresh pine aroma, as it is made from freshly ground pine bark.

Horticultural Benefits

Low pH decomposing soil helps in conditioning the soil
It is a proven option for weed control unlike any other. SPM has one of the best weed controls in areas where chemical control cannot be used
It helps in holding soil moisture by moderating the effects of dry, hot summer days

Composted pine mulch processed from fresh pine bark

Appearance

This type of pine mulch is fully composted in a managed process. It has a chocolate brown/black colour, which gives a rich soil like appearance.

Pine Chip (Fibertop®)

Engineered wood fiber for a safe and accessible playground surface

Appearance

Pine Chip (Fibertop®) mulch is engineered from a mixture of debarked wood straight from the sawmill. The ratio of small to medium and large size particles are optimized in order to provide the maximum impact attenuation. While soft enough to be safe, properly installed Pine Chip (Fibertop®) is also firm enough to be accessible for persons with special mobility needs.

Four Season Mulch

Appearance

Aged pine bark. Brownish tan colour, ages to dark.
